Bitcoin cycles and drawdowns

Each completed market cycle from a record high to its bottom and back to a new all-time high. Drawdown is measured from the cycle's peak (daily high) to its lowest daily low; recovery is the time from that bottom to the next record.

Peak Peak price Bottom Bottom price Max drawdown Recovery to new high
November 30, 2013 $1,156 January 14, 2015 $171.51 −85.2% 1 year and 11 months
December 17, 2017 $20,089 December 15, 2018 $3,191 −84.1% 2 years
November 10, 2021 $68,790 November 21, 2022 $15,599 −77.3% 1 year and 3 months

These cycles track Bitcoin's four-year rhythm around the halvings of 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024. The 2013 top gave way to the long post–Mt. Gox bear market; the 2017 peak was followed by the 2018 bear; the March 2020 COVID crash cut the price in half in days before the run to the 2021 high; and the 2022 bear, deepened by the LUNA and FTX collapses, preceded the 2024–2025 cycle to the current all-time high.
